Easy

The short version

It comes down to one thing: shading

Easy carves are all big cut-throughs — openings that go straight through the pumpkin. As difficulty climbs, the shapes get finer and then shading enters the picture: peeling back just the skin so light glows through in soft tones. By Expert, the whole piece is built from shading, with cut-throughs used only for the deepest shadows.

What makes a carve this level

Every line is a full cut-through, and the shapes are large enough to carve without a fine blade.

The classic jack-o'-lantern. You cut all the way through the pumpkin wall to make a handful of bold openings that glow. Shapes are chunky with plenty of space between them, so there is nothing delicate to snap and no shading to worry about. If it is someone's first pumpkin, this is where they start.

Best for

First-timers, young carvers, and anyone who wants a great porch pumpkin in half an hour.

What makes a carve this level

Still all cut-throughs, but with more of them, thinner bridges between shapes, and details small enough to need a precision blade.

A step up in count and precision. You are still cutting all the way through, but now there are more openings, narrower strips of pumpkin holding the design together, and smaller details that reward a steady hand. A slip can break a thin bridge, so you slow down and plan your cuts. The result reads as a real picture, not just a face.

Anyone who has carved a face before and wants something that looks designed.

What makes a carve this level

The design mixes full cut-throughs with skin-peeling — removing just the outer layer so light glows through in soft grey tones.

This is where carving becomes shading. Instead of every line going all the way through, you peel back only the skin in places so a dim glow comes through, giving you a second shade between solid pumpkin and open cut. Combining crisp cut-throughs with one or two peeled layers takes patience and a real feel for how thin to go. Mistakes are harder to hide.

Experienced carvers ready to move past pure cut-outs into tonal work.

What makes a carve this level

Photo-real work carried almost entirely by shading — many layers of carefully thinned pumpkin creating smooth gradients, with cut-throughs used sparingly.

The show-stoppers. Expert pieces are built from continuous tonal gradients: you thin the pumpkin wall to many different depths to sculpt light like a charcoal drawing, using full cut-throughs only for the darkest accents. It demands specialty tools, hours of focus, and an eye for value. This is the level competition carvers and gallery pieces live at.

Serious hobbyists, competition carvers, and anyone chasing a wow piece.

How we rate every carve

We rate on technique, not subject. A cute ghost and a scary skull can both be Easy if they are simple cut-throughs. What moves a design up the scale is how much fine cutting and shading it takes to pull off. When a piece sits between two levels, we round to the harder one, so nothing catches you off guard mid-carve.
