Put your own twist on a classic jack-o'-lantern

Triangle eyes and a toothy grin work because they stay clear when the pumpkin is lit. You can change the personality with just a different eye angle, a missing tooth, or a wider smile.

Use the pumpkin's shape

A squat pumpkin leaves room for a broad grin, while a tall pumpkin gives a witch or ghost more height. Turn the pumpkin before drawing to find a face with fewer deep ribs.

Leave space between cuts

Draw the eyes, nose, and mouth together before removing any pieces. Leave generous strips of pumpkin between them, especially above a wide mouth, so the face remains supported.

Add one Halloween detail

A bat, crescent moon, or pointed witch hat can make a familiar face feel different. Keep the extra shape away from the main cuts. For a scene, try a single ghost or house silhouette before adding trees and windows.

Classics pumpkin carving questions

What is a classic jack-o'-lantern design?

A classic jack-o'-lantern has triangle eyes, a small nose and a broad grin with a few teeth. Change the eye angles or leave out a tooth to give it a different personality. Witches, bats and ghosts are other traditional Halloween subjects.

Do I need a pattern for a traditional pumpkin face?

You can draw a simple face directly with a marker. Sketch the complete expression first and leave space between the eyes and mouth. A printable stencil helps when you want to repeat a particular face or match several pumpkins.
