Change the mood with eyes, brows, and a grin

A spooky face is a study in expression. Before adding scars or wrinkles, decide how the eyes and mouth relate to each other: suspicious, furious, startled, or quietly sinister.

Draw the brow line first

Low, slanting eyes create a scowl, while tall eyes suggest surprise. Keep enough pumpkin between the eyes and any separate eyebrow cuts so the upper face does not become fragile.

Build the grin around a few teeth

Large gaps and uneven teeth give a mouth character. Attach each tooth to a solid edge and avoid long, thin tips. A narrower grin can leave more room for cheek and nose details.

Check the face from a distance

Light the pumpkin and step back before adding more marks. If the expression is unclear, simplify it. Shallow scraping can add wrinkles while leaving the pumpkin wall connected.

Spooky Faces pumpkin carving questions

How do I design a spooky pumpkin face?

Sketch the eyes and mouth together. Slanted eyes make a scowl, round eyes can look startled, and an uneven grin can look unsettling. Leave a wide band of pumpkin above the mouth to support the face.

How do I carve a toothy grin without breaking the teeth?

Use a few broad teeth with wide bases attached to the upper or lower mouth edge. Follow the design's cutting order and remove large surrounding sections carefully. Surface-scraped teeth are another option for fine details.
