Build a scary pumpkin around one strong feature

A threatening expression usually comes from the relationship between the eyes and mouth, rather than the number of cuts. Decide whether your pumpkin should glare, snarl, or suggest something lurking in shadow.

Shape the expression

Angle the eyes down toward the nose for a scowl, or make one eye larger for an unsettled look. Sketch the mouth before cutting so there is enough pumpkin left between the grin and the eyes.

Keep the teeth sturdy

Leave teeth attached to the upper or lower edge of the mouth. Broad bases hold up better than long, needle-thin points. Use a few large fangs when a complicated row would weaken the face.

Check the silhouette after dark

Light the pumpkin with an LED and stand back. Small scratches can disappear at a distance; bold eye shapes and a clear mouth carry the scare. For a haunted scene, keep one main subject and simplify the background.

Scary pumpkin carving questions

What makes a pumpkin carving look scary?

Angled eyes, an uneven grin and a few large fangs create a threatening expression. For a scene, use one clear silhouette such as a ghost or haunted house. Check it with an LED light: large shapes stay readable from the sidewalk.

Which scary pumpkin ideas are easiest to carve?

Try two slanted eyes and a wide mouth with one or two broad teeth. A simple ghost outline is another starting point. Leave generous strips of pumpkin between the openings and avoid rows of tiny teeth.
