Give your monster a recognizable face

Classic monsters have useful visual shortcuts: vampire fangs, a werewolf's pointed ears, a mummy's bandages, or a zombie's uneven eyes. Choose the feature that tells the story before adding texture.

Pick two defining details

A widow's peak and fangs suggest a vampire without a full portrait. A heavy brow and broad jaw can carry a Frankenstein-inspired face. Fewer, larger shapes are easier to cut and read across a porch.

Turn texture into shading

Use shallow scraped lines for fur, scars, and bandage edges. Cutting every line through can leave a face held together by very thin strips. Keep the main structural areas intact.

Use asymmetry deliberately

Uneven eyes and a lopsided mouth suit zombies and shambling creatures. Sketch the effect first, then check it with a light inside. Roughness works best when the overall expression is still clear.

Monsters pumpkin carving questions

Which monster makes a simple pumpkin carving?

A vampire face can read clearly with two broad fangs and a pointed hairline. A mummy can use a few wide bandage shapes, while Frankenstein's monster can use a flat head and simple scar marks. Start with one recognizable feature.

How can I add monster texture without fragile cuts?

Scrape scars, stitches or fur into the surface instead of cutting every mark through. Keep teeth attached at a wide base and leave solid bands between the eyes, nose and mouth.
