Alabama State Map

From pumpkin to porch

1. 1

Prep the pumpkin and pick your face

Choose a tall, fairly flat-fronted pumpkin so the map sits upright and reads clearly. Cut a lid from the bottom or the back rather than the top, which keeps the front smooth for the outline and makes it easy to set over an LED later. Scoop the insides and thin the front wall to about one inch so light passes through evenly. A thinner wall glows brighter and is far easier to cut cleanly.

2. 2

   Transfer the state outline

Print an Alabama outline sized to fit the flat front with a little margin all around. Tape the paper on and poke closely spaced dots along every edge with a pushpin or a poking tool. Pay special attention to the jagged eastern border and the little coastal notch at the bottom so those turns are clearly marked. Peel the paper and connect the dots lightly with a pencil if it helps you see the full shape.

3. 3

Score the outline before cutting through

Using a fine detail saw, first trace the entire outline with a shallow scoring pass, not a full cut. This gives you a guide groove and lets you fix any wobbles before they are permanent. Keep the saw straight into the wall and let the teeth do the work with light pressure. Go slowly around the jagged river edge, making short controlled strokes for each point.

4. 4

   Cut the coastal corner first

Start your full cuts at the small notched corner at the very bottom of the shape. This little detail is the most fragile, so removing it while the larger wall above is still intact keeps it supported and clean. Make gentle, patient strokes and support the piece with a finger from behind as it loosens. Ease it out rather than forcing it so the thin points do not snap.

5. 5

Cut and remove the main shape

Work your way up the mostly straight western and northern borders, then finish along the jagged eastern edge. Cut the big straight runs last so the wall stays rigid while you handle the detailed side. Push the piece out gently from the inside once every edge is cut through. Clean up any ragged spots by running the saw back along the groove for a crisp border.

6. 6

   Light it and photograph

Set a battery LED puck or a string of LED lights inside for a warm, even glow, and skip open flame since the deep cutout channels a lot of light. For a soft, filled look like a map lantern, tape a sheet of parchment or tissue behind the opening on the inside. Test in a dark room and shift the light around until the whole state lights up evenly. Snap your photo from straight on so the outline reads clearly.
