   Start with the widest part of the state body where there are no thin fingers. Use a small saw blade and take slow, straight strokes, letting the piece drop inward or pulling it out gently. Establishing this core opening gives you a clear edge to work from. Keep the surrounding skin intact for now so the spurs stay supported.

   Release the spurs from base to tip

   Work each protruding finger and panhandle one at a time, cutting from where it meets the main body outward toward its point. This keeps the slender extension attached to the pumpkin wall until the final stroke. Use the very tip of the blade for the sharpest notches and go slowly through the two upper-left panhandles, which are the most delicate. Save any long, thin points for last.

   Clean the edges and test the glow

   Trace the inside of every cut edge with your knife tip to remove ragged bits so the silhouette looks crisp. Drop in an LED light and check the shape in a dark room. If a spur looks mushy or too thin to hold, trim it slightly wider rather than leaving it fragile. Skip candles, since the fine edges near an open flame can scorch.

   Set it up and photograph

   Place the pumpkin on a flat surface with the map facing your main viewing angle. Use a bright warm LED puck or a string of LEDs pushed toward the front wall for even fill light. Photograph in a dim room so the orange shape pops against the dark skin. Mist the cut edges with water if they start to dry and curl over the next few days.
