   Cut the narrow panhandle carefully

   Saw the thin upper column first, while the surrounding pumpkin is still fully supported and rigid. Make short, patient strokes and let the saw do the work so you do not push sideways and crack the slim walls on either side of the slot. Support the pumpkin with your free hand near, but not directly behind, the blade. If the wall flexes, ease off and take smaller bites.

   Open the wide lower body

   Cut the large lower section last so the pumpkin keeps its structure as long as possible. Work from the center outward toward your scored lines, removing the plug in pieces rather than all at once. Clean up the edges with a paring knife so the straight borders look crisp and the eastern notches stay sharp. Push the cut piece out gently from inside to avoid tearing the front skin.

   Light it and photograph

   Set a battery LED puck or string inside and aim it toward the front wall so the whole state glows evenly. Skip real candles, since the tall panhandle opening can trap heat and the light needs to spread across the wide body. Place the pumpkin on a step at dusk and shoot slightly off to one side to catch the depth of the cut edges. A little warm ambient light in the background keeps the shape from looking flat.
