Florida State Map

From pumpkin to porch

1. 1

   Transfer the state outline

Print or draw a Florida map outline sized to fit the front of your pumpkin, keeping it a bit smaller than the widest curve so the shape sits on flat surface. Tape the pattern in place and poke closely spaced holes along every edge with a pin or awl. Pay extra attention to the jagged Atlantic coast on the right, since those little inlets read as texture once lit. Remove the paper and connect the dots lightly in pencil so you can see the full shape.

2. 2

Open the lid and clean out the inside

Cut a lid from the bottom or the back rather than the top so the stem stays intact and the pumpkin sits steady. Scoop out the seeds and pulp, then thin the front wall where the map will be to about one inch. A thinner wall makes the fine coastal cuts easier and lets the light push through more evenly. Wipe the inside dry before you start cutting the design.

3. 3

   Carve the panhandle first

Begin with the wide rectangular panhandle across the top, since it is the most stable part and anchors the whole design. Use a medium carving saw and make slow, steady passes, letting the tool do the work instead of forcing it. Keep your cuts perpendicular to the surface for clean edges. Removing this large section first gives you a solid reference for the rest of the outline.

4. 4

   Trace the peninsula body

Work down the long peninsula, cutting the smoother Gulf side on the left and adding the small jagged notches along the Atlantic side on the right. Switch to a smaller, finer blade for the coastal detail so you keep control on the tight turns. Cut in short strokes and pause often to clear loose bits. Keep the southern tip attached for now so the shape stays supported.

5. 5

   Finish the fragile southern tip

Save the narrow southern tip for last, when the rest of the outline is already open. Use your smallest blade and very light pressure, tracing slowly so the thin point does not crack or tear away. If the tip feels weak, leave a tiny bridge of skin and shave it thin from the inside instead of cutting all the way through. Gently press the piece free once every edge is scored.

6. 6

   Light it and photograph

Set a battery LED or a string of LEDs inside so the whole state glows in one connected shape. Skip real candles, since the heat can soften the thin peninsula and dull your crisp edges. Place the pumpkin on a windowsill or dark surface and shoot at dusk when the interior glow reads brightest against the fading light. Turn the pumpkin slightly until the coastline texture catches the shadow.
