Mellow the Chill Capybara

From pumpkin to porch

1. 1

Pick a tall pumpkin and open the back

Choose a rounded pumpkin with a smooth, flat area on one side for the capybara. Cut a lid or a door in the BACK, not the top, so the front face stays clean for your design. Scoop the seeds and scrape the inside wall behind the silhouette down to about an inch thick so light passes through easily. A thinner wall glows brighter when you peel it.

2. 2

   Transfer the capybara outline

Print or draw the capybara silhouette at a size that fits your flat area with room to spare. Tape it on and poke small holes along the outline, the ear, the eye, and the nostril with a poker tool or pin. Remove the paper and lightly connect the dots with a washable marker. Keep the boxy muzzle and tucked front paws in mind so the shape stays clearly a capybara.

3. 3

   Score the outline

With a small carving knife, score along the outline about a quarter inch deep. Do not cut through the wall. This shallow cut gives you a clean edge to peel up to and keeps the glowing shape crisp. Take your time around the ear and the paws where the line changes direction.

4. 4

Peel the body to make it glow

Using a ribbon scraper or lino-style gouge, remove only the orange skin inside the outline. Thin the flesh evenly until the whole capybara starts to look translucent, testing with a light as you go. Work in shallow passes rather than digging deep in one spot so you avoid soft thin patches or holes. The more evenly you thin it, the smoother the glow.

5. 5

Leave the eye and nostril dark

Do not peel the small round eye and the nostril. Leaving that skin untouched keeps them dark against the glowing body, which gives the face all its personality. If you want them sharper, lightly score around each dot so the peeled edge stops cleanly. Resist cutting them all the way through, since dark spots read better than bright holes for the face.

6. 6

   Light it and photograph

Drop a battery LED puck or string light inside and set it near the peeled panel for the strongest glow. Skip real candles, since the thin peeled wall can scorch and the heat dries the pumpkin out fast. Set it on a step at dusk, add a lantern or mums nearby, and take your photo while the surrounding light is still soft. Wipe the cut edges and refrigerate the pumpkin overnight to keep it fresh longer.
