   Start with the long vertical broom handle as a single uninterrupted cut. Cutting this first gives the whole design a stable spine and keeps the thin handle from wobbling later.    Open the body and tail outward

   Work from the anchor line outward, cutting the round body next, then the fanned tail feathers one section at a time. Leave narrow uncut bridges between neighboring feathers so the points stay attached and do not snap. Cut the largest openings, like the body center, last so the pumpkin wall stays rigid while you work the details. Ease each cut piece out slowly to avoid tearing the edges.

   Clean the edges and add glow

   Trim any ragged spots with a paring knife and lightly bevel the inside edge of the big openings so more light spills out. Drop in a battery LED light rather than a candle, which is safer and will not scorch those thin feather points. Rub a little petroleum jelly on the cut edges to slow drying. Set it outside at dusk and snap your photo while the backlight outlines every feather.
