   Print or draw the cartoon rat and tape it flat against the smoothest face of the pumpkin.    Have an adult cut a lid from the bottom or the back so the front face stays unbroken, then scoop out the seeds and pulp. Scrape the inside wall behind the face down to about one inch thick using a loop tool. A thinner wall makes the fine eye rings and paw lines easier to cut cleanly. Set your LED light inside now to test how the glow spreads before you cut.

   Cut the eye rings and pupils

   Start with the two big circular eyes since they are the most detailed part. Cut the open ring of each eye first, then carefully leave a small round skin dot floating in the center for the pupil. If a pupil dot feels loose or wobbly, back it with a small adhesive-backed craft foam dot pressed from inside. Work slowly with a small detail saw and let the blade do the cutting rather than forcing it.

   Carve the outline and paws

   Cut along the narrow lines that form the body outline, ears, snout, and the four clawed paws. Keep these as thin connected channels so the shapes stay attached and the wall does not collapse. Cut the clawed toes as short slits rather than long fragile spikes so they hold up on the porch. Save the widest openings, like the large glowing body area, for last.

   Open the big glow areas last

   Now remove the large sections that will carry the brightest light, working from the center of each opening outward to the marked edges. Support the surrounding shell with your free hand as you free each piece. Trim any ragged edges from behind so the light reads as clean shapes. Bevel the inside edges of the eyes slightly to widen the openings and boost their glow.

   Light it and photograph

   Drop in a bright LED puck or a battery string, never a candle, and set the rat on a flat step. Check that both pupil dots stay centered and dark against the glowing eyes. Wipe the cut edges dry and add a smear of petroleum jelly to slow browning. Shoot your photo at dusk so the eyes pop against the darker skin.
