Work in small sections and keep your free hand behind the blade, never in its path.

   Etch the muzzle and cheeks with lighter, tighter strokes so the face stays smooth against the fluffy ruff. Save the true cutouts for last: pierce two small eyes, a little nose, and the tiny tongue all the way through the wall. Keep these openings small and leave narrow bridges of skin between them so the face does not crumble. Round the cut edges slightly for a softer, friendlier look.

   Refine and clean up

   Step back and check that the fur direction reads clearly, then add extra flicks anywhere the coat looks flat. Brush away crumbs with a dry pastry brush and wipe the etched surface. If any stroke tore, smooth it with the tip of your tool. A light coat of petroleum jelly on the cut edges slows drying and keeps the fur crisp for a few days.

   Light it and photograph

   Drop a battery LED inside, warm white looks best for a golden coat. The design also stands on its own unlit, so try it both ways. For photos, shoot in a dim room at dusk so the peeled coat glows without blowing out the details. Snap a few angles and share it with the community.
