Support the pumpkin wall with your free hand as you push the blade through.

   Light it and photograph

   Set an LED puck light or a battery string inside and slide the pumpkin over it, keeping the bulb an inch or two from the thin front wall so the glow spreads evenly. Skip candles, since the heat can scorch and dry out the delicate etched sections. Rub a little petroleum jelly on freshly cut edges to slow browning, then place the pumpkin on the porch and take your photo at dusk when the glow reads best against the dark.
