   Start with the small rectangular notch so you handle the trickiest detail while the panel is still solid. Use a small pumpkin saw and make short, controlled strokes, letting an adult run any blade. Cut the notch as a clean little step, then gently push the piece out. Getting this detail right early sets the reference for the rest of the shape.

   Run the four outer borders

   Saw the four sides one at a time, keeping the blade straight up and down so the opening walls stay square. Support the panel with your free hand near each cut but keep fingers off the blade path. Work slowly through the ribs and let the saw do the cutting rather than forcing it. Ease out the large center piece last so the border does not crack.

   Clean the edges and inner wall

   Trace back over each border with the saw to square up the cut and remove any ragged pulp. Lightly scrape the inside face of the opening so light spreads smoothly instead of catching on lumps. Sand or shave any wobble in the straight lines with a small knife. Step back and compare the finished square to your reference one more time.

   Light it and photograph

   Set a battery LED puck or string inside, never a candle, and aim it toward the front panel. If the glow looks harsh, tuck the light lower so the square reads as a soft, even block of orange. Photograph at dusk on a porch or bench so the warm interior contrasts with the cooler background. A second small light behind the pumpkin adds depth.
