Pick and prep the pumpkin

Choose a large, round pumpkin with a wide, fairly flat front so the broad Frenchie face has room to spread out. Cut a lid from the bottom instead of the top so the stem stays intact for looks, or open the back if you prefer. Scrape the inside wall behind the face down to about one inch thick so a blade passes through easily. A thinner wall makes narrow line cuts much cleaner.

Transfer your outline stencil

Print the French bulldog outline sized to fit your pumpkin and trim close to the design. Tape it flat, snipping darts around the edges so it hugs the curve without wrinkling. Use a poking tool or pushpin to dot along every line, spacing the dots close together on tight curves like the nose and jowls. Peel the paper and connect the dots lightly with a marker so you can see the full drawing before any cutting.

Cut the outer ears and lower jowls first

Start with the sturdiest, most separated lines: the outer edges of the two bat ears and the wide curves of the lower jowls. Use a sharp, narrow saw blade and keep each cut a consistent width, following your dotted line slowly. Work from the outside of the face inward so the pumpkin stays strong while you handle it. Support the wall with your free hand near, not directly behind, the blade.

Carve the inner details

Move to the forehead wrinkles, the eye curves, and the broad flat nose. These lines sit close together, so cut one, clear the piece, then move on rather than cutting several at once. Keep short uncut gaps as bridges wherever two lines nearly touch so nothing crumbles. If a sliver feels loose, leave a little extra skin rather than forcing it out.

Score the center bridge last

Save the narrow strip between the two eyes for the very end, since it is the most fragile part of the face. By now the rest of the design is finished and the pumpkin will not need much more handling. Make this cut with gentle, patient strokes and clear the waste carefully. If it starts to weaken, stop and leave it slightly thicker for support.

Light it and photograph

Drop in a battery LED light, warm white or orange, and set it low so the light climbs evenly through all the lines. Skip real candles, since the thin cuts and dry edges are easy to scorch. Take your photo at dusk on a porch or paver walkway so the glowing outline pops against the dark. A little petroleum jelly on the cut edges slows drying and keeps the lines crisp for a day or two.
