Pick a tall, smooth pumpkin

Choose a pumpkin with a flat, even front panel that is a little taller than wide, since the seated puppy is a vertical shape. Wipe the surface clean and dry it so your stencil will stick. A smooth face makes the silhouette edges read clearly once lit. Set it on a stable table at a comfortable height before you start.

Open a back access hole

Instead of cutting the lid off the top, have an adult cut a round or square opening in the back of the pumpkin. This keeps the front panel intact for the design and gives you room to reach in. Scoop out the seeds and pulp, then thin the inside front wall to about one inch so it carves easily. A thinner wall lets more light pass through.

Transfer your puppy stencil

Tape your floppy-eared puppy silhouette flat against the front, smoothing out wrinkles. Poke closely spaced dots along every outline with a poking tool or push pin, paying extra attention to the tight gaps beside each ear. Remove the paper and connect the dots lightly with a pencil so you can see the full shape. Double check that the ears, head, and body still form one connected outline.

Cut the tight ear gaps first

With a thin-bladed pumpkin saw, carefully cut the narrow gap between each ear and the torso before touching the large body area. Working these small, precise cuts while the surrounding rind is still rigid keeps the piece from flexing or tearing. Take slow, gentle strokes and let the saw do the work. Adults should handle these fine cuts.

Open the large body section

Now cut around the main outline of the head and seated body, saving the biggest openings for last. Support each piece with your free hand and push it gently inward, then remove it so the edges stay clean. If a spot resists, resaw rather than forcing it. Clean up any ragged edges so the silhouette looks crisp when backlit.

Light it and photograph

Slip a warm white LED puck or string inside for a soft, natural glow rather than a bright orange one. Place the pumpkin near a lantern or fireside spot and dim the room to see the silhouette pop. Adjust the light position until the ears and body glow evenly. Snap your photo in low light for the coziest look.
