Pick a small pumpkin and open the lid

Choose a small, round pumpkin with a smooth flat area on the front for the paw. An adult should cut a lid from the top or a hatch in the back at an angle so the piece rests back in place without falling through. Scoop out the seeds and pulp, then scrape the front wall until it is about one inch thick. A thinner wall is much easier to cut through.

Trace the paw shapes

Sketch or trace the layout with a washable marker before any cutting. Use a small cup or a round cookie cutter for the four toe pads, arranging them in a gentle arch. Draw the big center pad below them as a wide rounded triangle. Step back and check the spacing looks like a paw, then adjust the marker lines while they still wipe off.

Poke the outlines

Transfer each line into the skin with a poking tool or a pushpin, making small dots every quarter inch along every shape. This gives you a dotted map to follow so your blade does not wander. Keep at least a half inch of skin between each toe and the center pad. Those gaps are what hold the design together.

Cut the four toe pads first

An adult should saw along the dotted lines of the smaller toe pads using a fine carving saw, letting the tool do the work with gentle strokes. Push each cut piece inward or outward and remove it cleanly. Starting with the small shapes builds control before the big cut. Tidy any rough edges from the inside with the tip of the saw.

Cut the large center pad last

Save the biggest opening for last so the pumpkin stays rigid while you work. Saw slowly around the wide rounded pad and support the piece with your free hand as it comes free so it does not tear the surrounding wall. Trim the inner edges smooth. If the wall feels flimsy, leave a thin bridge at the top of the pad and hide it behind the light.

Light it and set it by the door

Drop an LED puck light or a battery tea light inside, never a flame, so the shapes glow evenly all night. Set the pumpkin at eye level on the porch step and check that all five pads read clearly from a few feet away. Snap your photo after dark when the warm glow really pops. Wipe the cut edges with a little petroleum jelly to slow drying.
