This keeps those key features reading as dark against the light. Work slowly and check the depth against a backlight if you can. Leaving these details raised is what makes the dog look happy and alive rather than like a blank blob.

   Cut the interior openings

   Switch to a thin jab-saw or fine scroll blade for the brightest cutouts inside the face and along the fur outline. Cut the smaller interior gaps first while the pumpkin is still strong, saving the largest openings for last. Follow the rounded ear shapes gently and leave narrow bridges of pumpkin where fur tufts meet so nothing falls in. Let the blade do the work and avoid forcing tight curves.

   Clean the edges and test the glow

   Go back and bevel the cut edges slightly from the inside so more light spills through the openings. Wipe away loose bits and dry the surface. Drop in a bright LED puck or two and check the portrait from across the room, then from the end of the driveway. Touch up any spots that read muddy by peeling a little more skin.

   Set it low and photograph

   Place the finished lantern at ground level on a porch step so the light throws upward across the dog's face. Add a second LED if the lower half looks dim. Rub a little petroleum jelly on the cut edges to slow drying and keep the fringe crisp for a few extra days. Snap your photo at dusk when the amber glow reads strongest against the darker doorway.
