Download the Fairy Silhouette pumpkin stencil as a free printable PDF, then tape the pattern to your pumpkin and trace the lines. A fairy silhouette in mid-flight fills this Halloween pumpkin stencil: wings spread wide, one arm extended forward, legs bent behind her in motion. The entire figure is carved away as a single large negative space, so the fairy appears as a dark void backlit by candle glow against orange pumpkin skin. Because the wing tips and fingertips taper to narrow points, keep the blade perpendicular to the surface and cut those extremities last, after the bulk of the silhouette is already removed. It works as a carving template for a Halloween jack-o'-lantern or a fall porch display. It is rated Beginner-friendly. Estimated time: 45-60 minutes. Actual time varies with preparation, pumpkin size and experience. Larger shapes and shorter cuts. An adult should handle sharp carving tools.

Frequently asked questions
Can I resize this stencil?βΎ
Yes. The PDF is vector so it scales cleanly. Print the pattern at 100% for a 7 to 10 inch pumpkin, 130% for 11 to 13 inch, or 150% for a giant. Use your printer's "Fit to page" or "Custom scale" setting.
What kind of paper works best?βΎ
Standard 20 lb letter or A4 printer paper is fine. Heavier paper is harder to bend around the pumpkin curve. If your printer supports it, set the quality to 'best' so the lines are crisp.
How long will the carved pumpkin last?βΎ
Usually 5 to 10 days. Coat all cut surfaces with petroleum jelly and store the pumpkin somewhere cool overnight. Avoid direct sun. Battery LED pumpkin lights produce no heat and help it last longer.
Can I sell pumpkins carved with this stencil?βΎ
Yes, the carved pumpkin you make is yours. The license covers personal and small-scale commercial carving (selling carved pumpkins, photographing them, posting on social). You may not resell the PDF file itself.
What if my printer doesn't print the whole stencil?βΎ
Set 'Page scaling' to 'Fit' in the print dialog and uncheck 'Auto-rotate'. If it still cuts off, the design includes 0.25" of safe-area margin so a small crop won't ruin it.
How to carve this stencil
This is a cut-through stencil: the gray areas on the printable pattern are the pieces you remove, and everything white stays attached. The steps below give you the safest carving order. Plan on about 45-60 minutes from print to candle.
Set up first. Print the PDF at 100% scale on letter or A4 paper. Cut the lid at an angle, scoop the pumpkin clean, and thin the carving wall to about 1 inch where the design will sit. Tape the pattern on (snip small darts in the paper so it hugs the curve) and transfer every outline by poking dots along the lines, about one every 1/8 inch. Peel the paper away and carve dot to dot with short, straight strokes.
Carving order
- Start along the wings. Plunge in at the large upper wing and cut its long sweeping curves first, working into the notch where the two wings meet with cuts from both sides.
- Work the fine extremities. Cut around the extended hand, the hair bun, the small face notch, and the pointed skirt tips. Each tapers to a narrow point, so cut toward every tip from both directions and never twist the blade at a point.
- Cut the legs and lower body. Follow the long trailing legs down to the pointed toes. These skinny runs flex easily, so keep one hand flat against the pumpkin behind the cut.
- Release the plug. Leave a small tab attached along the straight back of the figure until the entire outline is cut. Support the large plug from outside, cut the tab, and ease the whole fairy through in one piece.
Clear loose fibers out of each opening as you go, and never twist or pry the blade against the shell; back it out and recut instead. When every piece is out, wipe the cut edges dry and drop in a battery LED puck.

Beginner-friendlyMoonbeam Unicorn Pumpkin Stencil
A graceful unicorn head in profile, complete with a spiral horn, an alert ear, and a flowing mane that ends in four swooping points down the neck. The whole silhouette is cut through as one large opening, so the entire unicorn glows against the dark pumpkin. It is an easy carve despite its size; remove the big piece in two or three sections instead of forcing it out whole.
IntermediateToadstool Hollow Pumpkin Stencil
Three toadstool mushrooms of staggered heights cluster at the base of a tall pumpkin, with four round dots floating above them like drifting spores. The mushroom caps, stems, and dots are all cut fully through, so the whole woodland scene glows as connected pools of light. For this medium carve, cut the two small side mushrooms first to warm up, then tackle the big center cap; leave the narrow stem-to-cap junctions until your final passes.
Expert / ProWoodland Toadstool Relief
An enchanted cluster of spotted toadstools carved in deep relief: one grand mushroom with a striped, gilled underside towers over smaller caps, ribbed stems, and leafy ground cover below. There are no pierced holes; the whole scene is sculpted by shaving the wall to different depths so light glows warmest under the big cap. This expert design rewards planning, so rough out the major cap shapes first and save the fine gill lines and spots for last.
