How to carve a ghost pumpkin stencil
A ghost is a single opening with two eyes left uncut inside it. Cut the wavy bottom edge first in short strokes, then up the sides and over the head, and finish the tail points with a knife. The eyes and mouth must stay attached to the ghost's edge or they will fall in; leave a bridge at the top of each.
Ghost pumpkins on a dark porch light the way for trick-or-treaters. Hang a cheesecloth ghost above the pumpkin for a matching pair.
Questions
Ghost stencil questions
How do I stop the ghost's eyes from falling into the pumpkin?+
Do not cut all the way around them. Leave each eye attached to the top edge of the ghost opening by a bridge of pumpkin, so the eyes hang like dark ovals inside the glow.
What is the easiest ghost stencil?+
The single floating ghost with two oval eyes. It is one opening and takes 20 to 30 minutes, which is why it is a favourite with kids.
How long do ghost pumpkin stencils take to carve?+
Check the individual stencil's carving guide for its time estimate. Preparation, pumpkin size, wall thickness and your experience affect the total; difficulty alone does not determine carving time.
