How to carve a heart pumpkin stencil
A single heart is one opening: cut the two lobes with short strokes, the notch at the top with a knife, and the bottom point from both sides. A pattern of small hearts should be cut in a staggered order with at least an inch between them. Hearts with wings keep the feathers scraped.
A heart pumpkin at the door says welcome without a word. Two small ones side by side are a nice touch for a couple's first Halloween together.
Questions
Heart stencil questions
What is the easiest heart stencil?+
The single large heart. It is one opening with two curves and a point, takes about 20 minutes, and kids can cut most of it with a plastic saw.
How do I carve a pattern of many small hearts?+
Keep the hearts at least an inch apart, cut them in a staggered order so no area is weakened at once, and thin the wall a little less than usual, to about an inch and a quarter.
How long do heart pumpkin stencils take to carve?+
Check the individual stencil's carving guide for its time estimate. Preparation, pumpkin size, wall thickness and your experience affect the total; difficulty alone does not determine carving time.
