The Soaring Front Kick Pumpkin Carving Idea

Pick a sturdy pumpkin and open the back

Choose a tall, wide pumpkin with a smooth flat area on one side for the figure. Cut a lid or an access hole in the back, not the top, so the front face stays uninterrupted. Scrape the inside wall behind the design down to about one inch thick with a scoop so light passes through evenly. A thinner wall is much easier to cut cleanly for a detailed silhouette like this.

Transfer the fighter and mark your bridges

Tape your stencil flat over the smoothest part of the pumpkin and poke the outline with a pin or transfer tool. Before you cut anything, mark where the ankle, the kicking foot, and the punching wrist connect to the body. Widen those joints slightly beyond what your template shows, since thin connections are where cutout figures snap. Also mark the belt tails as their own small shapes so you remember to leave skin between them and the body.

Peel the figure to a dim glow first

Use a shallow gouge or lino tool to skin-peel the entire fighter silhouette, removing just the orange skin and leaving a thin translucent layer. This gives you a soft glowing figure and a clear map of your shape before any full cutouts. Working the peel first lets you check the pose and fix the outline while the shell is still solid. Keep the belt area peeled but not yet cut so you can decide the ribbon spacing.

Cut the small detail gaps

Now switch to a fine saw and cut the tight negative spaces first, like the gap between the punching arm and the head, the space under the kicking leg, and the slots that separate the belt tails. Cutting these small openings while the surrounding shell is intact keeps everything aligned. Saw slowly with gentle pressure and let the blade do the work rather than forcing it. Support the pumpkin from the side, not by pressing on the design.

Open the large body and leg last

Once the small gaps are done, cut the big bright areas: the torso, the extended kicking leg, and the front foot. Save these largest openings for last so the shell holds its shape while you carve everything around them. Push cut pieces inward and out through the back hole rather than pulling them forward. Go back and clean each edge so the silhouette reads sharply when lit.

Light it and photograph the motion

Drop in a battery LED, warm white or amber, and set the pumpkin so the fighter faces your walkway. An LED stays cool and will not scorch the thin peeled areas, unlike a candle. Step back in the dark to check that the pose reads and the belt ribbons look like they are flying. Snap your photo at dusk when the porch is dim but there is still a little sky color behind it.
