   Carve the splinters last

   Save the flying board fragments and cracks for the very end, when the rest of the design is stable. Cut these fine shards with a sharp detail knife and leave small bridges of skin connecting fragile points so nothing snaps off. Cut the sharpest splinter tips fully through for tiny bright flashes of light. Take your time, since these little details sell the impact of the kick.

   Light it and take your photo

   Drop in a battery LED light, warm white if you have it, and set it low and toward the back so it fills the glow field evenly. Blot the cut edges dry and rub a little petroleum jelly on them to slow browning. Set the pumpkin on a porch step at dusk and shoot slightly off center to catch the depth of the layers. A second small light near the splinters can make them sparkle.
