   Using a lino gouge or the shallow end of a carving tool, scrape away just the orange skin for the eye dot and the zigzag teeth. Remove only the outer layer so light glows dim through the thinner flesh without opening a hole. Doing these delicate scrapes while the wall is still fully intact keeps the pumpkin sturdy and gives you a stable surface to work against.

   Saw the body as one connected shape

   With a fine pumpkin saw, cut the long silhouette in short gentle strokes, working the inner details and the jaw opening before the big body opening. Keep the tail, legs, and back as one continuous connected outline so no small pieces float free. Support each section with your free hand as it loosens, and push finished pieces gently inward to pop them out. Leave the solid band of pumpkin under the belly untouched for support.

   Light it and set it out

   Drop in a battery LED puck or string light rather than a candle, since the big open body lets plenty of light escape safely. Set the pumpkin on the porch step and test the glow in the dark, rotating it so the jaw faces trick-or-treaters. If any edge looks ragged, trim it smooth from the inside. A light coat of petroleum jelly on the cut edges slows drying and keeps the gator looking crisp longer.
