Pick a smooth face and clean the pumpkin

Choose a broad, flat area on the front of the pumpkin with as few ribs as possible so the silhouette stays readable. Wipe the surface clean and dry it. Since this is a skin-peel design, you do not need to open the lid or hollow the pumpkin unless you plan to add a light. If you do want interior glow later, cut a small door in the back rather than the top.

Print and transfer the silhouette

Print a ballerina in arabesque sized to fill most of your chosen face. Tape it flat, smoothing it over the curve so the pose does not distort. Prick along the outline with a pin or a poker tool every few millimeters, paying extra attention to the raised arm, the extended leg, and the pointed toe. Peel the paper away and connect the dots lightly with a pencil so you can see the full shape.

Score the outline cleanly

Using a small detail saw or a sharp gouge, trace just the outline of the dancer about a quarter inch deep. Do not cut through the wall. This shallow border gives you a crisp edge to peel up against and keeps your shaving from wandering into the background. Work slowly around the fingers and the tip of the toe where the shape is narrowest.

Shave the body first

With a small looped gouge or a ribbon tool, shave off the outer skin inside the largest areas first, the torso and the flared tutu. Remove only the thin orange skin so the pale flesh underneath shows through, then even it out for a smooth glow. This is where the shading effect lives, so keep your depth consistent. Adults should handle the gouge, and always push the blade away from your hand.

Save the thin arms and legs for last

Peel the outstretched arms, the standing leg, and the raised leg on your final passes. These slender shapes are the easiest to tear, so use light, short strokes and support the skin with your free thumb. If an edge feels ragged, clean it with the tip of a paring knife rather than digging deeper. Take your time here because these lines carry the grace of the pose.

Clean up and photograph in daylight

Step back and check that the peeled area reads as one connected dancer. Touch up any thin spots by shaving a hair more skin to brighten them. Because this design shows off in natural light, set the pumpkin on a porch step and photograph it during the day. If you added a back door, drop in an LED tea light for a gentle evening glow, never a candle.
