Pick and prep the pumpkin

Choose a rounded pumpkin with a wide, smooth patch on one side big enough for the full shark profile. Have an adult cut a lid or, better for a design this size, a hole in the back or bottom so the front face stays intact. Scoop the walls down to about an inch thick on the carving side so the tools glide through. A thinner wall makes the cutouts cleaner and lets more light escape.

Transfer your stencil

Tape a home-printed hammerhead stencil flat against the front, snipping the edges so it hugs the curve without wrinkling. Trace the outline with a pin wheel or a poking tool, dotting closely along the head, body, and fins. Mark the gill slits too, but note which parts stay attached so they do not get cut away. Peel the paper and connect your dots lightly with a pencil if the pattern is faint.

Cut the main body first

Start with the large central body shape, which is the biggest and most forgiving opening. Use a small serrated carving saw and let the blade do the work with gentle strokes, keeping your other hand clear of the path. Cut with the saw close to perpendicular so the edges are square and strong. Push the piece out gently from the inside once the outline is fully separated.

Open the head and tail

Move to the wide hammer-shaped head and the angled tail fin, cutting each as its own clean opening. Keep a small bridge of skin where the head meets the body if the span feels weak, so the silhouette does not sag. Work slowly around the tight corners of the hammer, making short cuts rather than forcing long ones. Test-fit and clean up ragged edges with the saw tip as you go.

Save the fins and gills for last

Cut the skinny dorsal and pectoral fin tips only after the big shapes are done, since thin points are the easiest to snap. For the gill slits, only score and peel shallow lines or leave them as narrow attached strips so they show as dark bars against the glow. Do not cut the gills all the way through or they will merge into one bright blur. Take your time here because these small details sell the shark.

Light it and photograph

Drop a battery LED puck inside rather than a candle, which keeps the thin fins from scorching and is safer on a porch. Rotate the light until the whole silhouette glows evenly and the gill lines stay crisp. Rub a little petroleum jelly on the cut edges to slow drying and keep them looking fresh. Set it near a lantern and mums for a cozy night shot.
