Pick and prep the pumpkin

Choose a pumpkin with a smooth, mostly flat front face so the block letters sit clean and readable. Wipe the surface dry, then cut a lid from the bottom or the back rather than the top so the stem stays intact for that porch look. Scoop the inside until the front wall is about one inch thick, which makes the letters easier to cut and lets more light through. An even wall also keeps the glow consistent across all four shapes.

Transfer the layout

Print or draw the I, heart, and SC at a size that fills the front face with a little breathing room around the edges. Tape the pattern flat and poke evenly spaced holes along every outline with a poking tool or pin. Peel the paper and connect the dots lightly with a washable marker so you can see each shape clearly. Double check spacing now, since the heart sits between the I and the SC and should feel balanced.

Cut the easy shapes first

Start with the I, which is just straight lines, using a small serrated carving saw and gentle even pressure. Move to the heart next, cutting each half from the top point down to the bottom point in smooth strokes. Let the two curves meet cleanly at the bottom tip so it reads as a heart, not a leaf. Push the cut pieces out from the inside with a finger to avoid tearing the edges.

Tackle the S in one sweep

The S changes direction twice, so cut it as one continuous flowing motion rather than stopping and starting. A thin flexible blade follows the double curve best and helps you keep the width even from top to bottom. Rotate the pumpkin as you go instead of twisting your wrist into an awkward angle. If the shape drifts, it is easier to trim a curve wider afterward than to fix a jagged stop-and-go edge.

Finish the C and clean up

Carve the C as a single open curve, keeping its thickness close to the S so the two letters match. Once all shapes are out, run your blade back along any rough edges to smooth them. Bevel the inside edges of each cutout slightly toward the center so more light spills out the front. Wipe away marker lines with a damp cloth.

Light it and set the scene

Drop a battery LED light or two inside and skip candles, since open flame is a fire risk and gives uneven light. Place the pumpkin near the front door so approaching visitors can read the lettering. Flank it with mums or a lantern for that cozy stone-porch feel. Snap your photo after dark when the glow is strongest.
