Pick a round pumpkin and plan the layout

Choose a tall, round pumpkin with a smooth, flat front so the letters read clearly. Sketch the four elements first: I, a heart, then T and N below. Mark them lightly in chalk or washable marker to check that spacing and sizing look balanced before any cutting. Keep the letters large and the strokes wide, since thin lines are hard to cut and weaken the shell.

Open the pumpkin and clean it out

Have an adult cut a lid from the bottom or the back rather than the top, so the carved front stays undisturbed. Scoop out the seeds and pulp, then scrape the inside wall behind the design down to about one inch thick. A thinner wall is much easier to push a saw through and lets more light escape. Save some scraped pulp in case you want to reattach a piece later.

Transfer your stencil

Tape a home-printed stencil flat against the front and poke along the outlines with a pin or a poker tool. Space the dots close together on curves like the heart and the N's diagonal so the shape stays true. Peel off the paper and connect the dots with a marker if the pattern is hard to read. Double-check the heart sits centered above the T and N before you commit.

Cut the simple shapes first

Start with the I and the heart, since they are the most forgiving. Use a small serrated carving saw and let the tool do the work with gentle back-and-forth strokes, cutting perpendicular to the surface. Push each freed piece out from the inside with your thumb rather than pulling it toward you. Work slowly around the heart's point and dip so the tip does not tear.

Carve the T, then the N last

Cut the T's vertical post and top bar as clean openings. For the N, carve each element from top to bottom and leave the diagonal stroke for last, so the two vertical legs stay supported while you work. Separating the diagonal only at the end keeps the letter from collapsing inward before all three strokes are defined. Take your time here, since this letter carries the most risk of a piece breaking loose.

Light it and stage the photo

Set a battery LED light or two inside for a steady, safe amber glow, never a candle. Point the light toward the front wall so all four cutouts shine evenly. Place the pumpkin outdoors after dark with the carved face turned away from any water source to avoid splashing the cuts. A calm lakeside or porch backdrop makes the warm light really pop.
