   Pick a smooth, flat-faced pumpkin and wipe it dry. Print a rose-and-stem stencil sized to fill the upper two thirds of the face, tape it in place, and poke the outlines with a pushpin or transfer tool. Trace the spiral center, each outer petal, both leaves, and the stem. Peel the paper and connect any faint dots with a washable marker so you can see every skin line that must stay.

   Open a back access hole and gut it

   Cut a hole in the back or bottom rather than the top so the front face stays intact. Scoop out the seeds and scrape the inside wall behind the rose down to about one inch thick. A thinner wall on the design side makes cutting cleaner and lets more light through. Do the scraping now while the face is still solid.

   Cut the spiral center first

   Start in the middle of the bloom where the shapes are smallest. Use a fine detail saw and cut each curved petal opening one at a time, always leaving the marked skin strips between them uncut. Work from the center outward so the surrounding surface stays firm while you handle the tricky curls. Push gently and let the tool do the work to avoid tearing a bridge.

   Open the outer petals and leaves

   Move out to the larger outer petals, cutting each as its own opening so the dividing lines stay standing. Then cut the two leaf shapes, keeping the center vein and edge lines intact as dark skin. These bigger openings are easier, but keep your free hand clear of the blade path and take breaks to check that no bridge is loosening.

   Carve the lower stem last

   The straight stem runs down toward the base where the wall is thickest and most likely to crack under pressure. Cut it in short passes from the top of the stem downward, easing the blade rather than forcing it. Because you have already cleared everything above, any small crack here stays in an area that is already open and will not spoil the bloom.

   Light it and photograph

   Drop in a battery LED puck or string, not a candle, so the thin bridges do not scorch. Set the brightness so the petal lines read clearly against the glow. Take your photo at dusk against a simple background like a wood step or a mum planter. If any edge looks fuzzy, trim it clean and refresh the glow.
