   Move outward to the longer, wider petals, sawing slowly along each curve and easing the plugs out. Leave the round center for a decision: cut it fully for a bright hub, or peel it for a softer glow (see the light levels below). Take breaks to let the pumpkin rest so the bridges do not tear under repeated pressure.

   Carve the stem and two leaves

   The curved stem is a thin cutout, so saw it as one gentle sweeping line and remove the sliver. Add the two side leaves as small pointed cutouts branching off the stem. Keep the stem line narrow but not razor thin, since a slightly wider channel holds up better and still shows light. Do these lower elements after the bloom so the face has the most support while you handle the petals.

   Light it and take your photo

   Set a battery LED tea light or a small puck light inside rather than a flame, since the enclosed cutouts trap heat. Turn it on in a dim spot and check that every petal glows evenly. If any petal looks dull, shave a little more from the inside edge of that opening. Photograph it at dusk on a porch or garden bench for the warm, golden look.
