Pick a tall pumpkin and plan the placement

Choose a tall, fairly smooth pumpkin so the wide horizontal shape has room to sit centered on the front. Wipe the surface clean and dry it. Hold your home-printed stencil against the pumpkin and mark where the top border and Cape Cod hook will land. Aim for the design to sit near the belly where the surface is flattest, so the long straight edges stay true.

Open a lid and hollow it out

An adult should cut an angled lid around the stem so it drops back in without falling through. Scoop out the seeds and pulp, then scrape the inside wall behind your design down to about one inch thick. A thinner wall is much easier to pierce cleanly and lets more light through. Save the flat scraping tool for smoothing that inside area.

Transfer the state outline

Tape your stencil firmly in place so it cannot shift. Trace the long straight upper border, the flat base, and the right end with a poking tool or transfer wheel, spacing the dots close together along curves. Pay special attention to marking the small Cape Cod hook accurately, since it is the detail people will recognize. Peel your stencil off and connect any faint dotted lines with a pencil.

Cut the long rectangular body first

Start the main cutout in the widest, most stable part of the state body. Use gentle sawing strokes and let the tool do the work rather than forcing it. Cut the long straight top and bottom edges and remove the large center piece by pushing it inward and easing it out. Leaving the fragile Cape Cod end intact for now keeps the whole shape from cracking.

Finish the Cape Cod hook last

Switch to a linoleum cutter or a fine hand drill to shape the small curved tip on the right end. Work slowly, making several light passes instead of one hard cut, so you do not snap the thin curl. Keep a tiny bridge of skin if the hook feels too fragile, then trim it only once the rest is solid. Clean up all edges with a paring knife for a crisp silhouette.

Light it and photograph it

Drop a battery LED tea light or a small puck light inside and settle the lid back on. Set the pumpkin on a windowsill at dusk so the glow reads against the darker glass. Rotate it until the state shape sits level and the hook is clearly visible. Take your photo before the light fades for that warm sunset backdrop.
