Pick and prep the pumpkin

Choose a large pumpkin with one wide, fairly flat face so the long car shape fits across it without wrapping around a curve. Cut a lid from the bottom or the back rather than the top so the stem stays intact for the photo. Scoop the inside until the wall on the carving face is about one inch thick, scraping evenly so light passes through cleanly. A thinner wall makes the fine aerodynamic details much easier to cut.

Transfer your stencil

Print your race car stencil sized to fit your pumpkin face with a little margin all around. Tape it flat, snipping the edges so the paper hugs the curve without wrinkling over the design. Use a poking tool or pushpin to dot along every line, spacing dots close together on the thin wing and tire details. Peel the paper and connect the dots lightly with a marker so you can see the full layout before any blade touches the rind.

Carve the fine details first

Start with the smallest and most fragile shapes: the front wing endplate, the roll hoop, and the narrow slots between the tires and the bodywork. Use a fine detail saw and make slow, straight strokes, letting the tool do the work instead of forcing it. Leave small uncut bridges between adjacent openings so the thin strips of rind stay attached and do not snap. Doing these while the big body opening is still solid keeps the surface firm and supportive.

Open the wheels and wings

Move outward to the four tire openings and the rear wing. Cut the round wheel shapes cleanly, then remove the flat wing sections, keeping the little endplate strips intact. Work from the center of each shape toward the edges so you are not prying on thin borders. If a piece resists, recut the line rather than pushing it free.

Remove the large body opening last

Save the biggest cutout, the main body and nose cone area, for the end. Because this is the most flexible part of the wall once removed, cutting it last means the fine details are already done on firm rind. Support the panel with your free hand as you finish the cut and lift it out gently. Trim any ragged inside edges with a paring tool for a crisp glow line.

Light it and photograph

Set a battery LED puck or string inside, never a candle, since the many openings can concentrate heat and dry the edges. Position the light low and slightly behind the design so it pushes even brightness through the wheels and body gaps. Rub a thin coat of petroleum jelly on the cut edges to slow drying and keep them sharp. Shoot the photo at dusk against a simple dark background so the racing silhouette stands out.
