Onyx the Killer Whale

From pumpkin to porch

1. 1

Pick your pumpkin and transfer the shape

Choose a tall, smooth pumpkin with a broad clear face so the leaping orca has room to stretch corner to corner. Wipe the surface clean and dry it well. Print or draw the orca outline, tape it in place, and trace the edges with a washable marker or a poking tool. Keep the shape simple and graphic rather than fussy so it reads from across the room.

2. 2

   Block in the black body

If you are painting, load a flat brush with thick black acrylic and fill the whole body in one even coat, working from the center out to the edges. Keep your outline crisp, since the sharp silhouette is what sells the animal. Let this coat dry completely before touching it again, usually an hour or two. A second coat gives you the deep, solid black an orca needs.

3. 3

Add the white eye patch and belly

Once the black is fully dry, switch to a clean flat brush and white acrylic for the oval eye patch and the belly sweep. Paint these as solid, confident shapes without blending into the black. If any white bleeds over the edge, let it dry and touch up with black afterward. Tight, graphic edges matter more than shading here.

4. 4

Or carve it for a glow instead

To light this design, leave the entire orca body as untouched skin and gently skin-peel only the white eye patch and belly with a shallow scoop or lino tool. Remove just the orange outer layer so those areas thin out and glow when lit. Take it slow and keep the peeled shapes even in depth. This turns the same silhouette into a soft nighttime version without cutting all the way through.

5. 5

   Seal and light it

For a painted pumpkin, brush on a thin coat of clear sealer to protect the paint and extend its life. If you carved the skin-peel version, rub the peeled areas with a little petroleum jelly to slow drying. Drop in a battery LED puck or tea light, never a real flame, so the belly and eye patch glow safely. Keep the light snug against the inside face.

6. 6

   Style and photograph it

Set the finished orca on a wood table or shelf with the animal facing your main viewing angle. For a coastal look, add a few shells, driftwood, or blue fabric around the base. Photograph the painted version in daylight to show off the crisp black and white, and shoot the carved version in a dark room to catch the glow. Take your photos the same day, since both paint and cut edges look freshest early.
