Prep the pumpkin and light

Pick a smooth, round pumpkin with a broad flat side that faces the walkway. Cut a lid or a bottom opening and scoop the inside until the wall on the carving side is about one inch thick. A thinner wall glows more evenly and is easier to cut. Drop in a bright yellow-toned LED to preview the color, and skip candles entirely.

Transfer your duck stencil

Tape the duck profile onto the flattest area at a comfortable height. Poke the outline with a transfer tool or pin, spacing the dots close together on curves like the head and bill. Mark the round eye and the sweeping wing line clearly so you remember they are not full cutouts. Peel the paper and connect any faint dots with a marker.

Set up the eye island first

Before any big cuts, carefully cut around the small round eye so it stays as an attached island of skin. Cut a clean ring and remove only the thin surrounding sliver you want to glow, leaving the center dot standing. Take your time here since this little detail sells the whole face. If your stencil shows a bright ring, peel that ring to a shallow depth rather than cutting through.

Score the wing line

Trace the curved wing line with a shallow scoring cut or by peeling a thin channel of skin, not by piercing the wall. This keeps the body opening in one solid piece and adds a soft glow along the wing. Use a lino gouge or a small detail knife and keep the depth even. A single confident curve looks better than a jagged one.

Cut the big body opening last

Now cut through the full duck body outline with a small saw, working slowly around the head, bill, and back. Support the shape with your free hand and cut in short strokes, saving the tightest curve at the bill tip for last. Push the piece out gently from the inside so the edges stay clean. If the bill point feels fragile, round it slightly so it will not snap.

Light it and set it out

Slip the yellow-toned LED back inside and check the glow in a dark room. If the eye or wing looks dim, peel a little more skin from the back side to brighten it. Wipe the cut edges dry and rub a little petroleum jelly on them to slow browning. Set the duck facing the path so bath-time fans spot it from down the block.
