Pick your pumpkin and plan the opening

Choose a large, round, smooth pumpkin so the wide brim has room to stretch across the face. Cut a lid from the bottom or the back rather than the top, which keeps the stem intact and lets you set the pumpkin over an LED light easily. Scoop the inside wall down to about one inch on the front where all the carving will happen. A thinner front wall makes both the crown and the fine triangle cuts glow evenly.

Transfer the sombrero outline

Print or draw the design at a size that fills the front of the pumpkin, with the tall crown centered near the top and the brim sweeping wide below it. Tape the pattern in place and trace the outlines with a pin tool, poking closely spaced holes along every edge. Mark the crown, both brim edges, and the hatband strip that separates them. Take your time here, since even dots make the later cuts easier to follow.

Mark all the triangles first

Before cutting anything, poke the full row of alternating up and down triangles along the lower brim edge with your pin tool. Working across the whole row first keeps the spacing even instead of drifting as you go. Aim for triangles of matching width and check the rhythm by eye from a step back. This planning step is the most repetitive part, so getting it done up front pays off.

Cut the crown opening first

Using a small serrated carving saw, cut out the tall rounded crown as your first opening. Saw with gentle, steady strokes held straight into the wall, and let the piece drop inward or pull it free. This first cut lets you check the wall thickness and shave it thinner if needed. Leave the thin hatband strip of skin between the crown and the brim untouched so the two sections stay defined.

Open the brim, then the triangles

Cut the wide brim opening next, keeping the ends tapered to clean points. Save the small triangle trim for last, since those little cuts weaken the edge and are easiest once the big weight is already removed. Cut each triangle cleanly and push the scraps out gently to avoid tearing the narrow bridges between them. Work slowly across the row so the trim stays crisp and even.

Light it and photograph

Drop in a bright LED puck or a string of battery lights and set the pumpkin where the brim reads clearly. A little extra light near the crown makes the tall glow pop above the brim line. Take your photo in the dark, slightly off to one side, so the shadows show the shape. Skip real candles, since the thin trim edges can scorch and dry out fast.
