Do the largest openings last to avoid stressing the finished detail.

   Carve the small cocked hat as a shape that stays connected to the skin around and above it rather than a free-floating piece. Cut only the lines that define its brim and crown, and leave the hat body as untouched or lightly peeled skin so it reads as a solid form. The little cross mark on the front can be a shallow poke or a tiny cutout for a spark of light. This keeps the top of the design strong.

   Light it and photograph

   Drop in a bright LED puck or a string of warm LED lights, never a candle, since the deep cutouts channel a lot of glow. Set the pumpkin on a railing or table at dusk so the carved light reads against the darker sky. Wipe the cut edges and rub a little petroleum jelly on them to slow drying. Shoot a few photos while the interior light is strong and the background still has color.
