   Start with the small triangle nose and the narrow brow slits using a fine saw blade. Cutting these smaller shapes first keeps the pumpkin wall strong while you work.    Open the eyes and mouth last

   Carve the two large teardrop eyes, then save the wide mouth for last since it removes the most material. Cut the mouth from the center outward toward each corner so the narrow bridge of skin between the nose and mouth stays supported until the end. Keep the rounded bottom of the mouth smooth for that gaping wail shape. Clean up any ragged edges with a small knife for crisp glowing outlines.

   Light it and photograph

   Set a cool white LED puck or a couple of battery tea lights inside for a ghostly cast. Cool white pushes the mood spookier than warm orange and suits the wailing face. Test in a dark room and rotate the light until the big cutouts glow evenly. Shoot your photo in low light with the pumpkin slightly above lens level for a dramatic look.
