   Cut the eyes from the outside in

   Saw each teardrop eye starting at its outer edge and working toward the center ridge. Take short strokes and let the blade do the work so you do not stress that thin skin bridge between the eyes. If the ridge starts to crack, stop and reinforce it from behind with a toothpick and a dab of glue. Remove each eye plug carefully by pushing outward, not toward the ridge.

   Save the big elongated mouth for the end so the shell stays strong while you carve the eyes. Cut the top of the oval first, then work down the sides and finish at the drooping bottom point. Support the plug with your free hand as you release it so it does not tear the lower edge. Clean up all the cut walls with a straight strokes for crisp lines.

   Set a battery LED inside, warm white or amber, and never a candle with a shape this tall and enclosed. Test in the dark and rotate the light until the eyes and mouth glow evenly. If the top of the mouth is dim, raise the LED on a small block. Shoot at dusk on a step or porch so the surrounding blue light frames that spooky glow.
