The Alaska pumpkin stencil is a free printable PDF template. Print it, tape the pattern on, and trace it onto your pumpkin. Alaska's unmistakable outline fills the stencil: the large mainland block with its jagged southeastern panhandle, the scattered Aleutian Island dots strung to the lower left, and the intricately serrated coastline that makes this the most complex state silhouette in the collection. Each island dot and every inlet notch is a separate piece to pierce, giving the lit pumpkin a constellation-like scatter of small glowing holes alongside the main glowing landmass. Cut the main body first, then use a thin detail blade to punch the individual island dots from largest to smallest. It makes a fun jack-o'-lantern design for Halloween night. It is rated Advanced. Actual time varies with preparation, pumpkin size and experience. Fine details and narrow supports need careful planning. Follow the cutting and shading key in this designβs PDF.

Frequently asked questions
Can I resize this stencil?βΎ
Yes. The PDF is vector so it scales cleanly. Print the pattern at 100% for a 7 to 10 inch pumpkin, 130% for 11 to 13 inch, or 150% for a giant. Use your printer's "Fit to page" or "Custom scale" setting.
What kind of paper works best?βΎ
Standard 20 lb letter or A4 printer paper is fine. Heavier paper is harder to bend around the pumpkin curve. If your printer supports it, set the quality to 'best' so the lines are crisp.
How long will the carved pumpkin last?βΎ
Usually 5 to 10 days. Coat all cut surfaces with petroleum jelly and store the pumpkin somewhere cool overnight. Avoid direct sun. Battery LED pumpkin lights produce no heat and help it last longer.
Can I sell pumpkins carved with this stencil?βΎ
Yes, the carved pumpkin you make is yours. The license covers personal and small-scale commercial carving (selling carved pumpkins, photographing them, posting on social). You may not resell the PDF file itself.
What if my printer doesn't print the whole stencil?βΎ
Set 'Page scaling' to 'Fit' in the print dialog and uncheck 'Auto-rotate'. If it still cuts off, the design includes 0.25" of safe-area margin so a small crop won't ruin it.
How to carve this stencil
- Thin the pumpkin wall to about 3/8 inch across the entire carving area before transferring the pattern.
- Transfer all lines carefully, marking each island dot individually.
- Cut the large mainland body first, removing it in one piece.
- Work along the southeastern panhandle next, following its narrow strip carefully with a thin-blade saw.
- Punch out the Aleutian Island dots from largest to smallest, using a small detail punch or narrow blade tip.
- Inspect from inside with a light to confirm all dots are fully pierced before removing the stencil.
Tools you'll need

AdvancedMaryland State Shape
Maryland glows inside a carved rectangular window, its straight northern border on top and the deeply notched Chesapeake Bay splitting the eastern shore from the mainland. The bay itself is left as standing pumpkin wall, so the two glowing landmasses frame it dramatically. That narrow bay peninsula is what makes this a hard carve; cut away from it on both sides, keep the strip at least a finger wide, and brace it from inside if needed.
AdvancedNorth Carolina State Shape
North Carolina stretches across the pumpkin as one long glowing cutout, from the pointed western mountain tip to the fringed Outer Banks coastline on the right. The entire state interior is removed so the distinctive wedge shape reads clearly at night. Rated hard because of the fine barrier-island fingers along the coast; cut the smooth northern border first, then work the ragged eastern edge slowly with a detail saw, leaving the thinnest points for last.
AdvancedMichigan Mitten Shape
Michigan's Lower Peninsula carved as one big glowing mitten, complete with the thumb of Saginaw Bay and the ragged shoreline notches along the lakes. The full state shape is cut through, so accuracy along that coastline is the whole challenge, which is what pushes this one to hard. Trace the outline with a fine saw, work the tight bay curves in several passes, and remove the waste piece in halves to protect the thumb.
AdvancedLouisiana State Shape
Louisiana's famous boot shape carved as a single luminous cutout, from the squared northern border down through the ragged bayou coastline and the toe of the delta. The entire state is removed so light floods the shape, with the surrounding pumpkin left solid. Rated hard because of the frayed coastal edges; use a thin detail saw for those little inlets and cut the delicate toe section last so it stays supported.
AdvancedMississippi Pumpkin Stencil
This pumpkin stencil cuts the outline of Mississippi as a single solid silhouette pierced entirely through the pumpkin wall. The western border is the most distinctive feature: a deeply notched, step-like edge tracing the course of the Mississippi River, while the right side drops in two clean vertical lines. Lit from inside, the whole state shape glows as one open window. Start your cuts along the jagged river edge, working in short strokes to keep each notch crisp.
AdvancedI Love New Hampshire Pumpkin Stencil
Rated advanced, this New Hampshire pumpkin stencil presents "I [heart] NH" in two rows with oversized block letters. The "N" and "H" are rendered in wide rounded caps: the "N" has a diagonal stroke creating a narrow wedge, while the "H" has a horizontal crossbar suspended between two uprights, leaving two open windows on either side. Tackle the "H" crossbar with plunge cuts at each end before sawing across to prevent the bridge from snapping under blade pressure.
