Frequently asked questions
Can I resize this stencil?βΎ
Yes. The PDF is vector so it scales cleanly. Print the pattern at 100% for a 7 to 10 inch pumpkin, 130% for 11 to 13 inch, or 150% for a giant. Use your printer's "Fit to page" or "Custom scale" setting.
What kind of paper works best?βΎ
Standard 20 lb letter or A4 printer paper is fine. Heavier paper is harder to bend around the pumpkin curve. If your printer supports it, set the quality to 'best' so the lines are crisp.
How long will the carved pumpkin last?βΎ
Usually 5 to 10 days. Coat all cut surfaces with petroleum jelly and store the pumpkin somewhere cool overnight. Avoid direct sun. Battery LED pumpkin lights produce no heat and help it last longer.
Can I sell pumpkins carved with this stencil?βΎ
Yes, the carved pumpkin you make is yours. The license covers personal and small-scale commercial carving (selling carved pumpkins, photographing them, posting on social). You may not resell the PDF file itself.
What if my printer doesn't print the whole stencil?βΎ
Set 'Page scaling' to 'Fit' in the print dialog and uncheck 'Auto-rotate'. If it still cuts off, the design includes 0.25" of safe-area margin so a small crop won't ruin it.
How to carve this stencil
Print both pages at 100% / Actual Size and check the one-inch ruler. The artwork box is 7 x 7 inches.
Carving key
White / K: keep the skin and flesh intact. Dark / C: cut these areas through with a pumpkin saw. Shading is not used. Numbers 1-4 indicate work order. Fine contours and narrow areas require care; support plugs rather than prying.
1. Shape the sleepy raccoon face
Cut the eye-mask pieces, nose and small smile marked 1. Keep the white openings at both outer eye corners clear; these connect the cheek areas to the rest of the rind.
2. Follow the forehead and ears
Cut the forehead and ear shapes marked 2. Approach each pointed ear from both sides. Do not close the white breaks at the bases of the ears.
3. Pick out the paws and side contours
Cut the little forepaws, feet and left-side contour pieces marked 3. Use short strokes around the toes. Keep the white belly and gaps around the wrists intact.
4. Finish the round haunch and striped tail
Remove the large body mass and four tail bands marked 4 last. Support each broad plug. Keep all white tail stripes and the channel between the tail and body uncut.
Previews are simulated. This design has not been physically test-carved. Narrow-area checks remain unresolved; this is a detailed pattern for careful carving.
