How to carve a fish pumpkin stencil
Cut the fish body as one opening, then finish the fins and tail with a knife. For scales, do not cut them; scrape overlapping half-circles across the body from head to tail. The eye is a small round cut with a scraped ring. Bubbles are pushpin pokes.
Fish pumpkins are a fun surprise at a pool party or a beach house. Several small ones with a scraped wave pattern look like a school swimming along the steps.
Questions
Fish stencil questions
How do I carve fish scales?+
Scrape them. Use a small gouge to lift half-circles of skin in overlapping rows across the body. Lit from inside, the scraped scales glow in a pattern.
What is the easiest fish stencil?+
The plain fish silhouette with a forked tail. It is one opening and takes about 30 minutes, and kids can do most of it.
How long do fish pumpkin stencils take to carve?+
Check the individual stencil's carving guide for its time estimate. Preparation, pumpkin size, wall thickness and your experience affect the total; difficulty alone does not determine carving time.
