Pick a smooth-faced pumpkin and clean it

Choose a pumpkin with one broad, fairly flat side and few bumps or scars, since relief carving shows every ripple. Wipe the surface with a damp cloth and dry it well so your marker lines stay sharp. You do not need to cut a lid or scoop the inside for this design. A clean, dry face makes the traced outline much easier to follow.

Trace the elephant with a fine marker

Print or draw a simple baby elephant facing right with the trunk raised, then tape the pattern over the flat area. Go over the outline with a fine washable marker, pressing lightly so you transfer the trunk curl, the big rounded ear, the eye, and the four sturdy legs. Step back and check the shape reads clearly from a few feet away before you cut anything. Redraw any lines that look shaky.

Score the outline with a craft knife

An adult should score along every marker line with a sharp craft knife, cutting only about an eighth of an inch deep. You are just outlining the skin, not cutting through the wall, so keep the blade shallow and steady. Leave the eye as a tiny untouched spot or a shallow poke so it reads dark against the light face.

Shade the details and clean the edges

For soft definition, peel the ear and trunk a hair deeper than the body so they catch a touch more shadow. Brush away shavings with a dry pastry brush or paper towel and check the outline under a lamp. Trim any ragged spots along the trunk curl and legs with the tip of the craft knife. The goal is a smooth storybook shape with tidy borders.

Preserve it and photograph it

Rub the peeled area with a thin coat of petroleum jelly or a light food-safe oil to slow drying and keep the pale rind bright. Because nothing is cut through, this pumpkin does best with side lighting rather than an inner LED, so set a small lamp or LED to one side to rake across the relief. Take your photo in the evening when the angled light deepens the shadows. Refresh the oil after a day or two if the surface looks dull.
