Pick and prep the pumpkin

Choose a tall, wide pumpkin with a flat, smooth front so the tall S has room to breathe. Cut a lid from the bottom or the back rather than the top so the stem stays intact for the photo. Scrape the inside wall behind the design down to about one inch thick with a sturdy scoop. A thinner wall is much easier to saw cleanly through.

Transfer your stencil and mark the bridges

Tape your dollar sign stencil flat against the front, snipping the edges so it hugs the curve. Poke the outline with a pin or transfer tool, following the thick vertical stroke, the S curve, and the two short horizontal bars. Before you cut, mark on paper and on the pumpkin exactly where each loop of the S needs a bridge. Plan a roughly 3mm strip of rind connecting each inner island to the main body so nothing drops out.

Peel the body for a soft glow

If you want the sign itself to glow dim orange instead of blasting full light, use a lino or ribbon tool to shave the top skin off the dollar sign shape, leaving the flesh intact. This gives a warm, softer look and keeps the wall strong. Skip this step if you prefer the brightest possible cutout. Work slowly and keep your other hand behind the blade.

Saw the small inner ovals first

Start with the tightest cuts, the two enclosed ovals inside the S curve. Use a small detail saw and pierce gently, sawing right up to your bridge marks but never through them. Leaving these small shapes for first means the surrounding rind is still firm and supportive. Push the cut pieces inward and out.

Cut the big shapes last

Now saw the long vertical stroke, the outer S curve, and the two horizontal bars. Do the largest openings last so the face keeps its strength while you work. Angle the blade slightly outward so light spills forward. Ease each piece out rather than forcing it, and trim any ragged edges from the inside.

Light it and photograph

Drop in a battery LED or two, warm white or amber for that classic glow. Set the pumpkin on a step or brick ledge at dusk and check that both S loops read clearly from a few feet back. If a bridge is too visible, gently thin it from behind. Never use a real candle, especially with a large cutout this open.
