A Catrina in full sugar-skull makeup cradling her speckled squash jack, painted with a matching grin. Día de los Muertos meets carving night.
Save this design for carving night, then share a photo of your own jack-o'-lantern once it's glowing.
The whole trick here is contrast. A pale, speckled squash becomes the canvas and flat black paint does all the work, so a friendly triangle-eyed grin reads clearly from across the room with no cutting at all. Plan the face first with light pencil, then fill it in solid, keeping the mouth teeth as clean negative gaps.

Choose a pale, heavily textured squash or pumpkin with a natural netted or speckled skin, since that mottled surface is half the charm. Wipe it down with a damp cloth and let it dry completely so paint will grip. Set it on a towel with the best-looking side facing you and the stem angled up. A dry surface keeps the black from beading or smearing later.
Use a soft pencil or a washable marker to rough in two triangle eyes, a small triangle nose, and a wide curved mouth. Keep the features high on the front third so the grin sits near the top like in the photo. Step back and check symmetry before you commit. Erase and redraw as many times as you need, since pencil wipes off easily.
With a small flat brush and matte black acrylic, or a wide paint pen, carefully fill the eyes, nose, and mouth. Paint the outline of each shape first, then flood the center so edges stay crisp. Leave clean unpainted gaps between the teeth so the grin shows the pale skin underneath. Two thin coats look far better than one thick, gloppy one.
If you want the Día de los Muertos link, add small decorative flourishes around the eyes with a fine brush, echoing sugar-skull swirls or tiny dots. Keep these subtle so the big grin stays the star. A little white or gray detailing inside the black eyes can suggest depth. Let everything dry fully before handling.
Since nothing is cut, you can fake a warm glow by lightly scraping a thin ring of skin just inside the mouth or around the eyes with a loop tool, going only a millimeter or two deep. Tuck a small battery LED puck behind or beside the squash rather than inside it. Never use a candle near paint. This step is entirely optional and best left to an adult with a steady hand.
Set your finished squash on a dark cloth or cradle it the way the pictured carver does for a portrait feel. Shoot in soft, even light to let the speckled texture and black grin pop, or try black and white to match the mood. A plain wall behind keeps the focus on the face. Snap a few angles before the paint picks up fingerprints.
Check things off as you get ready.
Work on a stable surface, keep your free hand out of the cutting path, and have an adult handle sharp tools.
The natural speckled skin across the whole squash stays untouched and pale, which is the main look.
A thin scraped ring just inside the mouth or eye edges gives a faint warm halo if you add a light.
Nothing is cut on this no-carve design, so there are no full-brightness openings.
No, this is a fully painted design, which is exactly why it is beginner friendly. You only need paint and a steady hand for the black shapes. If you later want a glow, keep it to shallow scraping rather than cutting through the wall.
Look for pale heirloom or netted-skin varieties with natural mottling, or a cheese pumpkin with a webbed surface. The texture is what makes the black grin pop, so the bumpier and more speckled, the better. A smooth orange pumpkin works too but reads more plain.
Acrylic or a paint pen bonds well to clean, dry skin and holds for the season if you avoid moisture. Do two thin coats and let each dry fully so edges stay sharp. Store it somewhere cool and dry, and it should keep its grin for weeks.
