Pick your pumpkin and light

Choose a large pumpkin with a smooth, tall front face free of deep ribs or scars, since flat skin holds fine detail best. Cut a wide access hole in the bottom rather than the top so the pumpkin sits stable and the stem stays intact. Set a bright LED puck light inside to test glow, and never use a candle for a shading piece like this. Scrape the inside wall behind the face down to about one inch thick so light can pass evenly.

Transfer the portrait

Print a high-contrast photo of a cocker spaniel and tape it firmly over the cleaned face. Trace the main shapes, the eyes, nose, muzzle, and the outer edges of both ears, using a poking wheel or a pin to dot the outline into the skin. Remove the paper and connect the dots lightly with a washable marker so you have a clear map. Mark which zones are lightest so you do not lose your plan once shaving begins.

Open the brightest highlights

Identify the small glints in the eyes, the top of the muzzle, and the bright forehead patch, and shave those spots thinnest so they glow strongest. Use a ribbon or gouge tool to skin these areas down to a thin, even layer, but do not cut clear through. Work slowly and check the glow with your LED as you go. Leaving even a sliver of flesh keeps the surface intact and avoids blowout holes.

Build the fur with etched strokes

Switch to a fine detail tool and carve the ears and cheeks as hundreds of directional strokes that follow the wavy fur flow. Vary your depth so raised strands stay darker and scooped grooves glow lighter, which creates the true gray tones. Keep strokes long and confident on the ears and shorter around the face. Step back often to judge the overall value pattern rather than fussing over single strands.

Deepen shadows and the nose

Leave the darkest areas, the nose, the eye outlines, and the shadow between the ears, mostly untouched so they read black against the glow. Only lightly scuff their borders so they blend into the shaded fur. The contrast between untouched skin and thin highlights is what makes the eyes look soulful. Resist over carving, since dark negative space gives the portrait its form.

Light it and photograph

Wipe the face clean, then place your LED puck inside and dim the surrounding lights to check the balance. If a highlight looks weak, shave it a touch thinner; if an area is too bright, it is best left as is since you cannot add flesh back. Rub a little petroleum jelly on the shaved surfaces to slow drying and keep the glow crisp. Photograph it at dusk on a porch step for that warm, backlit painting look.
