Transfer the portrait and mark your values

Pick a smooth, broad section of the pumpkin and clean it with a damp cloth. Tape your mastiff stencil in place and poke through the main outlines and the boundaries between light and dark zones. Before carving, lightly shade your pattern or the pumpkin with a washable marker so you know which areas stay dark, which get peeled, and which go lightest. A clear value map is the single most important step in a relief portrait like this.

Outline the head and ears

With a small detail knife or a fine loop tool, score along the outer edge of the head, ears, and chest. Keep these cuts shallow at first, just enough to define the silhouette. This gives you a clean border so your later shaving does not stray into the background pumpkin skin. Leave the darkest fur untouched

Peel the brightest areas first

Use a ribbon or loop tool to skin-peel the lightest spots, the chest and the upper cheeks, removing just the outer skin to expose the pale flesh underneath. Work in shallow, even passes so the surface stays smooth and glows softly. Grade the midtones with depth

Step down in stages rather than jumping from light to dark, and stop often to hold the pumpkin at arm's length to check the blend. Refine details and light it softly

Sharpen the eyes, nostrils, and the deep folds around the mouth last, using the tip of a fine tool for crisp accents. Since this design has no cutouts, an interior LED will not help much, so display it in soft, even daylight or under a warm side lamp where the relief shows best. A gentle raking light from one side deepens every shadow and brings the tonal work to life. Photograph it early or late in the day for the richest depth.
