Sharpen the transition around each eye carefully, since a Doberman's alert stare is the heart of the portrait. Do any true cut-throughs, like tiny catchlight points in the eyes, last and keep them small so the face keeps its structure. Bridge any thin skin lines so nothing tears.

   Light it and photograph

   Drop in a bright LED puck or battery string, never a candle, and view the pumpkin in a fully dark room. Look for spots that need to go brighter and shave them a touch thinner, checking after each pass. Wipe the cut surfaces and rub a little petroleum jelly on the exposed flesh to slow browning. Set it on a dark porch step and shoot the photo the same night for the best glow.
