Let each color dry before painting a neighboring one to keep the lines crisp.

   Add gradients and detail

   Blend the beak from yellow into orange into the dark tip while the paint is still slightly wet, feathering the transition with a soft brush. Add the red eye ring, the black eye, and the pale blue skin patch around it. Switch to a fine liner brush for the feather strokes on the chest and wing, and add a few highlights so the black plumage looks glossy. Paint the branch and leaf veins last.

   Optional glow accent

   If you want a little light in the design, you can gently scrape the skin off a small halo behind the bird with a ribbon tool so it glows dim orange when lit. Keep any scraping shallow and away from your painted areas so paint does not lift. This step is optional, since the design works purely as painted decor. Skip it entirely if you want a clean no-carve piece.

   Seal and stage

   Once everything is bone dry, brush on two thin coats of matte outdoor varnish to protect the paint from dew and rain. Set the pumpkin on a bench or step where the toucan faces your walkway. If you added the scraped halo, tuck a small battery LED puck behind or beside the pumpkin rather than inside, since the pumpkin is intact. Snap your photo in daylight when the colors read brightest.
