Pick a smooth, flat-faced pumpkin

Look for a pumpkin with a broad, even area on one side and few deep ribs, since ridges will distort the state outline. A medium to large pumpkin gives you room to leave at least two inches of uncarved skin around the small shape. Wipe the surface clean and dry so your stencil sticks flat. Set it on the surface the way it will finally sit so you carve the outline at eye level.

Open and clean out the pumpkin

An adult should cut a lid or a hatch in the back rather than the top, which keeps the carving face intact and hides the opening. Scoop out the seeds and pulp, then thin the inside wall behind the design area to about one inch. A thinner wall makes the cutout easier to carve and lets light fill the opening evenly. Save some flesh scraps in case you want to patch a slip later.

Transfer the Connecticut outline

Print the state shape sized to fit comfortably in the center of the face with margin all around. Tape your stencil in place, then poke closely spaced dots along the entire outline with a pin or a transfer tool. Pay extra attention to the two small notches along the lower edge where the coastline and the Greenwich corner sit, since those give the state its character. Peel the paper and connect the dots lightly with a marker so you have a continuous line to follow.

Carve the outline as one clean cutout

Using a small, fine carving saw, cut slowly along the marked line, letting the tool do the work rather than forcing it. Start with the flat top border and the two gently inward-angling sides, then work the irregular bottom edge carefully around the notches. Keep the blade close to perpendicular so the light reads the shape crisply. Cut the large open sections last, and gently push the piece out from the inside once the full outline is freed.

Clean the edges and test the fit

Trace the inside of the opening with your blade to shave off ragged bits and true up the small notches. If any inner corner looks soft, refine it with a smaller detail knife so the coastline stays readable. Rub a little petroleum jelly on the cut edges to slow drying and browning. Drop in an LED light and check that the glow fills the shape evenly, adjusting the wall thickness if one side reads dim.

Light it and photograph

Use a battery LED puck or string, never an open candle, and center it so the small opening lights up uniformly. Set the pumpkin on a porch bench or step in low ambient light so the warm shape stands out. Shoot from straight on to keep the outline from stretching, and take a few frames before the edges soften overnight. A cool, shaded spot between showings will keep the cutout crisp for days.
